It is hard to be dJ universalStyle.
I joined twitter.com, and of course I wanted to be dj universalStyle, or djUniversalStyle or something like that. But there's a 15 character limit on "screen names".
I considered some alternatives, googling variants like dj Universal, dj UniverStyle, dj Architect, ... Who knew this namespace was so densely populated!
I finally settled on dJdU.

What's Going On?
I decided I ought to create this blog. When you get this old, you start remembering things you should (maybe) write down and my kids complain I never tell them stories about myself. A blog should be easier to update, than trying to tell stories on my web page.
Why universalStyle?
Because I colonized that identifier a couple years ago as dj universalStyle [∂j/∂U for short] for making music. The original idea came from a packet of "shade brackets" proudly proclaimed to be UNIVERSAL STYLE.

Hinode
(This isn't really new. This is an item that was on my web page, and I decided to move to my new blog...)
Between 2001 and 2005, I had the pleasure of working with folks at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics on software engineering for the Solar-B X-Ray Telescope. I say "pleasure" because they are engineers and astrophysicists who really know their stuff, and are a delight to work with. Solar-B was successfully launched in September 2006 and renamed Hinode (which apparently means sunrise in Japanese). Hinode has been producing some amazing pictures:

ISO WG 42: Seoul
(Another old post moved off my web page to this blog.)
I just returned from the first ISO/IEC JTC1/SC7 WG 42 meeting in Seoul. WG 42 is the ISO working group managing the joint ISO, IEEE revision of IEEE Std 1471, one of my long-term projects.
The meeting was quite thought-provoking with a lot of level-setting of the participants; familiar with the current standard to varying extents, and discussions of the scope of the revision. The meeting minutes will be written up separately.
Visiting Seoul was quite enjoyable because the weather was beautiful, the people were friendly, and Seoul is very easy to get around. This picture, which now inhabits my laptop desktop, is the from the Gyeongbokgung Palace: the Palace of Shining Happiness.
